After about a year of planning and (mostly) procrastinating, here is our first progress post!
We currently have three ongoing projects (from the oldest to the one we started most recently): the wine cellar, the outdoor patio & fireplace and what we have come to call “the upstairs”.
Today was a big day relocating the stair to “the upstairs” and revamping the blog structure and I’ll begin posting about “the upstairs” in the next few weeks… but right now… we are (I am) the most excited to share the progress with the wine cellar.
Although there are a few items we still need to finish, it is beginning to finally come together after we laid out this rug!! I had started looking through vintage resellers and markets, thinking I would find a good deal on a vintage Persian rug– but finding something in the correct size and in the right colors was proving more challenging than I expected. I knew we wanted something rich in texture that would warm up the room and tie it together to give it that ‘smoking room’ feel we had originally envisioned.
After looking for a few months, I gave overstock a shot since I do use the site often to pick up decor and other household items and found a bunch of viable options that weren’t $$$$! In two days we had the rug (yay!)
It finally felt like the space was put together enough to start getting some nicer photos, rather than the rushed progress shots we usually take. It was also a great excuse to pick up a wide angle lens since this is the smallest room in the house worth photographing (yet.)
Mike started working on the cellar in April of 2015 and it took constant foundation and waterproofing work until the fall of 2016. By the end of 2016, we installed the custom wine rack, backlit wall, stone floor and reclaimed walls along with the window trim and shelf.
We will describe the process of detailing, building and finishing the space along with specs, drawings (and very cool pictures) in a separate post.
In 2017, we mostly focused on furnishing the cellar and finishing up the smaller details, while we started other projects.
We still need to finish up the curtain, install the shelves, hang up some awesome artwork and posters and figure out what we want to do about a bench or ottoman for additional seating. I’m also thinking a small bar cart would be awesome to the right of the chairs, but I haven’t sold Mike on the idea just yet.
