So what do we mean when we describe the house renovation as “DIY-ish”?!

…well, we both work in design and construction and between the two of us, we have more than 25 years of experience. This means we know which parts of the project we can do ourselves and which parts we’d rather hire trade professionals for– either because we are certain a trade professional would complete the work better or faster or because there’s some work we’re not crazy about tackling on our own.

In 2013 when he purchased the house, Mike started renovating the spaces that needed the most immediate cosmetic work and the least amount of substantial plan changes. This allowed him to upgrade the master bedroom/bathroom and kitchen along with some exterior hardscape elements without needing permits, making the house safe and comfortable to occupy while the larger projects got underway.

Since the Spring of 2016, the plans for the house have expanded and that was pretty much the beginning of ‘no small plans.’ At that point, I began documenting the plans and the work as it occurred. By the end of the year, we wanted to figure out a better way to record and share all the work we’ve (mostly Mike) have put into the house… so here we are!

Since we only spend weekends at the house, the majority of the work usually happens on a very tight schedule, so we normally plan during the week and try to get the bigger projects done over long holiday weekends.
